Mouth Pain Got You Down? Get to the Root of the Problem

Tooth problems can be a real pain in the wallet, but that is no reason to neglect your dental health. Neglecting to take care of that little cavity can have some serious implications later on down the line, including increasing your chances of needing a root canal in Chicago.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

It started out as a cavity. Just a little one, that didn’t even hurt. Over time and without intervention, the decay reached the soft pulp inside your tooth. Now that pulp is infected, and causing you pain. You need a root canal!

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure that involves drilling through the hard crown of your tooth, to where the infected pulp is. Then they clean out the interior pulp canals, removing the infection. The tooth is then filled with a material that is compatible with your tooth. Usually the material used is gutta-percha. A temporary filling may or may not be placed, depending on how far out from the procedure your follow-up is.

At your final appointment, a crown will be placed. If the remaining tooth lacks the stability to hold the crown, a post will be placed inside the tooth for added structure.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of treatment varies depending on your insurance provider, as well as how much treatment your tooth requires. Your provider should talk to you ahead of time about the potential costs and give you a rough estimate of what your insurance plan will cover. Keep in mind that this number can change if your dental provider finds additional damage during the procedure.

If you don’t have insurance, discuss payment plan options with your provider. Not treating the tooth is not an option, and other choices, such as pulling the infected tooth, can lead to bone structure problems down the line.
