Understanding Porcelain Crowns

Getting a crown or cap restores your teeth to its original shape and size. It also serves to protect a weak tooth from breaking, which usually happens with badly decaying teeth. If your tooth is cracked, then a crown can easily hold the parts together. Crowns are also used to hold a dental bridge in place, conceal severe cases of tooth discoloration and cover a dental implant or any badly-shaped tooth you have. It makes any number of cosmetic modifications that improve your teeth and smile.

Types of Crowns

There are four major types of crowns. These include:

Ceramic. These are used to restore front teeth. The material’s ability to blend in with the natural color of your tooth makes porcelain crowns the go-to option for those who have problems with their front teeth.
Porcelain fused to metal. These are crowns ideal if you want a longer-lasting option that the first one, Colgate reasons out. With proper care and maintenance, this could last you for many years.
*     Gold alloys. These crowns are made out of a mix of copper and gold along with other metals. Like porcelain-fused to metal crowns, these are durable. If you want teeth that won’t fracture or wear on your tooth, then this is a good option to consider.
*     Base metal alloys. Made of non-noble metals, these crowns demonstrate the strongest resistance to wear. It also doesn’t require the removal of a considerable part of the healthy tooth before the fitting.
